Privacy Policy
Balanced is a food and weight log made by Tambour in Montréal. It is designed so that your data stays yours: there are no accounts, no servers of ours, no advertising and no analytics.
What the app stores
- Your food entries (what you ate, when, calories and macros), your settings, and a copy of your weight history. These live in a document on your device. If iCloud Drive is enabled for the app, Apple syncs that document between your own devices under your Apple Account; we never see it.
- Daily backups of that document, in a folder you can see in the Files app.
- Optional API keys you choose to enter (Gemini, Claude), in the device Keychain.
Apple Health
With your permission, Balanced:
- Reads your body weight, active energy, resting energy and dietary energy, to show your calorie balance and weight trend.
- Reads your height, date of birth and sex, only to prefill the goal helper's calorie estimate. What you confirm there is saved in your own log on the device.
- Writes the foods you log as dietary energy, protein, carbohydrate and fat samples, each tagged with a stable identifier so re-syncing never duplicates.
- Optionally imports food entries other apps wrote to Health, if you turn that on.
Health data is used only to show you this information inside the app. It is never sent to us or to any third party, never used for advertising or analytics, and is never shared with the cloud AI services described below. The goal helper's optional review uses Apple Intelligence, which runs entirely on your device. You can revoke access at any time in the Health app under Sharing → Apps.
Food databases
Looking up a food by name or barcode may query Open Food Facts (openfoodfacts.org), which receives the search text or barcode and your IP address under its own privacy policy. The USDA and Canadian Nutrient File tables are built into the app and work offline; nothing is sent for those.
Optional AI features
“Describe it” turns a sentence like “two eggs and toast” into entries.
- On devices with Apple Intelligence, this runs entirely on the device.
- If you enter a Gemini or Claude API key, the sentence you typed, and short food descriptions needed to check a match, are sent to Google or Anthropic under your own API account and their terms. Google states that free-tier requests may be used to improve its products. No Health data and no other entries are included in these requests.
These features are optional; the app works fully without them.
What we do not do
No accounts, no tracking, no advertising identifiers, no analytics SDKs, no crash reporting services, and no sale or sharing of data. The app makes no network request except the ones described above.
Your control
Everything is on your device. Export the data file from Settings → Backups, or delete the app to remove all of it (and remove its Health permissions in the Health app).
